How will your project impact Oberlin?

UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who has donated and who continues to support the voice of student & community freedom in Oberlin, Ohio! We have reached our goal of $6,500 and are now able to install a new transmitter that will keep WOBC FM on air for decades to come!

But this fundraiser doesn't close until December 4th, and every cent we raise past our goal until then will go towards other essential WOBC equipment purchases that we can't fund on our own, such as improved vinyl equipment.

Our station desperately needs a new set of turntables and plenty of needles so our DJs can continue spinning records from our immense vinyl library, which has been collecting dust over the past year. Our turntables are currently inoperative for regular use. This prevents our longstanding community DJs to host their legendary WOBC shows that depend entirely on vinyl, and forces new DJs to rely solely on digital media. The walls of WOBC are lined with too much history, too many precious treasures, and too many undiscovered oddities for us to allow vinyl to be silenced on our airwaves.

Help WOBC continue our journey through the vinyl frontier and donate what you can before December 4th!

WOBC FM has been broadcasting from an old Orban model transmitter from the 1980s for the past 30 years, which has been proven to be on its last legs this season and in need of immediate replacement in order for WOBC to continue broadcasting.

Over the past year, our transmitter has been less and less consistent with its power outputs, which shortens the range of our broadcast and in turn, jeopardizes our listenership and reputation as a reliable source of programming in our promised 50 mile radius. Our outdated transmission system has a separate audio processor which has essentially ceased functioning as any useful regulating system over the last few months. The signal coming through is therefore unprocessed and subject to frequent distortion. In addition, transmitter power inconsistencies have lead to us broadcasting in MONO, which seriously detracts from our broadcasting quality, considering most music played on our station is designed to be played in stereo. While these extremes obviously degrade the quality of sound we broadcast, if the signal from the transmitter is too weak, it risks setting off our silence detector which will then turn off our transmitter and stop programming entirely. However, most new transmitters have built-in audio processors that together would remedy all of our current issues, prevent new problems from occurring, increase the consistency and quality of our programming, and allow us to continue broadcasting as WOBC FM for many more years to come! WOBC FM’s outdated and defunct transmitter may be on its last legs, but WOBC as a station and as an Oberlin institution is far from expiration. WOBC 91.5 FM is one of the last surviving 24/7 freeform college & community radio stations in the country, and our DJs and staff members enthusiastically uphold and innovate the traditions of our station every semester. WOBC is keeping the tradition and spirit of freeform radio alive in an era when so many other stations have been shut down due to lack of funds, resources, and passion. While we have no shortage of passion at WOBC, we need your help in securing the funds to purchase a new transmitter in order to continue broadcasting the voice of creative, political, and cooperative expression on campus, throughout the community, and around the world. Help us raise the necessary funds to purchase a new transmitter for WOBC FM and help keep the voice and spirit of college & community freeform radio alive at Oberlin for another 67 years!
